FLORENCE, Ala.- As remote work continues to prove it is here to stay, Remote Shoals- a remote worker relocation program incentivizing remote workers to move to Northwest Alabama- progresses forward. In February 2022, the program received its fourth round of funding in the amount of $400,000 in incentives.

Remote Shoals, spearheaded by the Shoals Economic Development Authority (Shoals EDA), launched in June 2019 with the goal of incentivizing remote workers to live in- and work from- The Shoals, an area that includes Colbert and Lauderdale counties in Alabama. After successfully recruiting 50 people to The Shoals, interest in the program continues to grow.

"While the numbers are proving that the program is a success," states Mackenzie Cottles, Marketing & Communications Specialist for the Shoals EDA, "the true success can be seen through the stories of our Remote Shoals residents. Seeing our Remote Shoals residents find their place in The Shoals community is truly something special and we are grateful to be able to offer The Shoals as a home to these folks."

Over 2,300 applications have been received from all 50 states plus a few international applications. Participants in the program have moved from 22 different states with one international move from Belize City. Including family members, significant others, etc., the program has relocated 102 new citizens to The Shoals.

The Shoals area boasts many amenities that can be attractive to remote workers. The attributes are best summarized as space, pace and community. The Shoals cost of living includes very competitive home prices. Many of these homes include a backyard conducive to gardening, a pool, or just about anything someone's heart desires. This space allows for one to breathe some fresh air and enjoy their surroundings as well as the many outdoor recreational opportunities. The area's pace is slower than a bigger city, but not slow enough to bore you. That is where the community comes into play. The welcoming community hosts events and festivals throughout the year where connections and friendships are easily formed.

Remote workers who are attracted to this style of life may be eligible to receive up to $10,000 to move to The Shoals. To be eligible, applicants must make at least $52,000 or more per year, be 18 or older, eligible to work in the U.S. and be employed outside the Shoals as a full-time remote employees or independent contractors. Individuals selected for the program must relocate to the Shoals within six months.
